Gasholder Park

Grade II listed gasholder transformed into Public Park

A Grade II listed Victorian gasholder, dismantled from its old location Pancras Square in 2011, has been lovingly restored as part of London’s newest park. Constructed in the 1850’s, Gasholder No8 used to hold 1.1 million cubic feet of Gas but its fragile circular frame had fell into disrepair. Suffering from stresses, strains and severe water damage during its long tenure, the structure has now been transformed to provide a unique place for Londoners to relax.

The brains behind the project are architects over at Ben Phillips who won the competition to design Gasholder Park back in 2009. Hari Phillips, partner at Ben Phillips, said:

“Gasholder Park is a fantastic project which combines the heritage of King’s Cross with contemporary architecture to create a unique place”

The space will double up as a venue for events and displays and adds a spark of life to the otherwise humdrumness of King’s Cross.

Restoration of the gasholder was conducted by Shepley Engineers

In tune with the ongoing regeneration being carried out by Argent in the Area, Gasholder Park is another great example of the gradual transformation of King’s Cross.  What was previously a bare industrial wasteland is slowly turning into a creative and diverse district of London.
