5 of our favourite things in the King’s Cross development

After over a century of industrial use, King’s Cross is finally becoming a destination in its own right. Ever since redevelopment began in 2008, King’s Cross has undergone a flourishing journey of transformation; changing from an industrial heartland, to a vibrant and exciting London district.

The expanse of the projects in King’s Cross spans over 67 acres and will provide new homes, offices and retail space, and although not fully completed, here are 5 things we love so far.

1. Of Soil and Water: King’s Cross Pond Club

Of soil and Water: King’s Cross Pond Club is the UK’s first ever man-made fresh water public bathing pond. The pond is part of the new art installation programme RELAY in the middle of the King’s Cross development site. This genius collaboration with nature was the brainchild of architects Ooze and artist Marjetica Potrc and was engineered by designers over at BIOTOP. Their aim? Getting us to think about the relationship between nature and urban environments.

The pond is open weekdays from 6am – dusk and weekends 8am – dusk.

Prices range from £3.50 – £6.50 for peak swimming but non swimmers can visit the grassy pond area at a discounted price.

2. Waitrose Cookery School

Situated in the historic Midland Goods Shed and East Handyside Canopy,  Waitrose have opened one of their largest Central London branches; complete with fresh food counters, a juice stall, in store wine and ale bar and a bakery.

But it’s not just these that have got us dying for our lunch break. Waitrose King’s Cross is also home to a new cookery school which offers two hour lessons at lunch time and after work. You can check the courses on offer here.

3. Yumchaa Tea Shop

We may not be able to speak for you, but here at King’s Cross Office Space we love a good brew. Whilst workers worldwide are propping their mornings up with copious amounts of coffee, we like to sit back and relax with a nice loose leaf tea. And so when tea specialists Yumchaa opened a new outlet in the Granary building, we were overjoyed.

The guys at Yamchaa really know what they’re doing. With a delicious selection of Green, Black, White and Herbal tea’s we highly recommend Yamchaa for tea amateurs and enthusiasts alike.

4. House of Illustration Gallery

Another fantastic addition to granary square is the House of Illustrations – the first public gallery solely dedicated to the art of illustration. Created by Quentin Blake (well known for his iconic illustrations in Roald Dahl’s books), House of illustration displays all forms of illustrations from picture books and political cartoons, to scientific drawings and fashion design.

House of Illustration is open from 10:00 – 18:00 from Tuesday to Sunday and is free to enter.

5. The Fountains at Granary Square

1,080 choreographed water jets make up the fountains outside of Granary Square, an area that has fast become a haunt for students studying at nearby Central Saint Martins. Plenty of picnic benches litter the square, and with the tasty Benugo Van close by, it’s the perfect place to stop for lunch.
